The fastest, but with no luck
The electric karts and Jasin Ferati - that could be something. After the first event of the German Electric Kart Championship (DEKM), the 15-year-old from Winterthur is one of the title contenders as fifth overall.
The second edition of the internationally advertised DEKM promises high excitement. At the season opening races in Wackersdorf, the ambitious drivers on the identical Rotax electric karts caused a lot of spectacle. Jasin Ferati was one of the protagonists. The young man from Winterthur caused a stir in all four stages at the Prokart Raceland with the fastest lap, but had to settle for the thankless fourth place in both finals. That was a success on the first day of the race because he had moved up from ninth position in very difficult conditions. On the second it was a bitter disappointment because he finished second, only six hundredths of a second behind the Berlin favorite Luka Wlömer, but like him saw himself put back by a five-second penalty due to an incorrect front spoiler position.
Despite this mishap - a parallel to the first prefinal - Ferati is doing well in the championship. After two of ten final races, the rookie is fifth and only 13 points behind second-placed German Joël Sturm. Only last year's third, Wlömer, who confidently won the first race from pole position, managed to pull away. "But that doesn't mean anything," says Ferati. “In this series, with a bit of luck, anything is possible. The switch to the further developed electric karts is not easy, but these vehicles are a lot of fun and offer good overtaking opportunities.”
However, one has to be patient for the second electrical operation in mid-July in Kerpen. The conventional OK karts now require full concentration. This week Jasin Ferati contests the second round of the European Championship in Genk, Belgium, with Stefan Bongartz's Millennium Racing Team.
