With Villeneuve in single-seater racing
Jasin Ferati was twice beaten by competitors at the Swiss championship race in Wohlen, and yet there is good news: The soon to be 16-year-old kart driver from Winterthur has been nominated for Jacques Villeneuve's racing driver school.
The world championship in Finland and the final of the DEKM are still on Jasin Ferati’s agenda as highlights of the 2019 karting season. In July, however, the talented Winterthur native took his first steps into single-seater racing. During yesterday's TV recording of the WIN4 sports date with Peter Sauber in the Axa Arena, Ferati was very happy about being admitted to the racing driver school in Magny-Cours, which Jacques Villeneuve launched. The 1997 Formula 1 world champion and his buddy Patrick Lemarié want to give young motorsport talents a chance and familiarize them with Formula 4 with the ambitious Feed Racing project.
“With this consideration, a dream comes true. I can hardly wait to sit in a real racing car for the first time,” admits Ferati. The first stage of the intensive training includes five test and training days in July on the club course in Magny-Cours, France. The lap times driven and the progress then decide on the qualification for the following courses on the Grand Prix circuit in the fall. Only participants born between 1997 and 2005 without any experience in formula or touring car racing are admitted to this new type of training format. “We want to find and promote natural talent, regardless of their financial means. In this respect, unfortunately, there is a lot going on at the moment,” says Villeneuve.
There was no reason for Ferati to celebrate at the Wohlen racetrack this weekend. At the second guest appearance as part of the Swiss Kart Championship, he only got to prove his talent once. In the second heat he fought his way up from last place on the grid to 4th position and was credited with clearly the fastest race lap. The fact that he had to start from the back in this race was the result of retiring after a collision on the starting lap in the first race. At the same place, he was involved in a collision in the final through no fault of his own. Despite considerable damage to the kart, he saved himself with a show of strength over the distance and defended 6th place to the finish. "Without the annoying incident, I would have made it onto the podium," said the winner from Castelletto with conviction. The final was just as frustrating for Sauber's Formula 3 hopeful Fabio Scherrer, who had dominated the first race from the front.
