year with ups and downs

Jasin Ferati Newsletter No. 12 / 2020 (December 22)
year with ups and downs

For the first time in his career, there were no trophies: Jasin Ferati can still look back on the premiere year in single-seater racing with his head held high. Problems in qualifying and dealing with pressure prevented better results.

Despite 35 days in the Formula 4 cockpit and more than 300 days in the simulator or in fitness training, Jasin Ferati's first racing car season did not bring the results he had hoped for. The championship in Italy with seven events and 21 races, which was postponed to the second half of the year due to the Covid-19 measures, has proven to be the greatest possible challenge for the Jenzer Motorsport team from Winterthur, who is supported by Racing Unleashed and many co-sponsors. In Germany there were twelve drivers at the start, in Italy there were up to 34 from all over the world.

Since Prema Powersport and Van Amersfoort Racing started with up to ten cars, the goal for the season with top 10 classifications was too high for the 17-year-old rookie Only the veterans Filip Ugran and Andrea Rosso were able to regularly break into the phalanx of the two top teams operating with larger budgets. For Ferati, the guest appearance in the Spanish championship on the Circuit Paul Ricard remained the highlight of the season with just missing out on the podium and finishing fifth and sixth. In Italy, 11th places at Misano and Imola with championship points in the rookie ranking were contenders. The unpleasant back injury as a result of a flight over the curbs in Monza, the cancellation of the start there and the subsequent forced break were the opposite of that.

The lap times in the free practice sessions confirmed Ferati's basic speed. The gap of 0.3 to 1.2 seconds to the more experienced team leader Ugran was to be expected. In qualifying, unfortunately, Ferati only managed to realize his potential with starting positions 10 and 16 according to the possibilities at the final event in Vallelunga. Good duels and a lot of place gains were noticeable in the first formula races. Poor starting positions and a few incidents at the “dummiest moment” cost better classifications and points.

"The 2020 season was very intense and full of ups and downs," Ferati summed it up. “In the first races I was able to place myself in the front midfield and regularly fight for points.

From the middle of the season it always became harder to break into the top 15. The gap to the top teams grew, although I never gave up and tried everything. It was annoying that we couldn't find an explanation for the step backwards despite many discussions in the team. Nevertheless, I learned a lot at Jenzer Motorsport and felt comfortable in the team. Physically, apart from the back injury, I was in good shape throughout the season. In terms of fitness, I was one of the best in the entire field thanks to the great effort I put into training. You can build on that. I still have to improve mentally, in particular, but I remain confident: no champion fell from the sky.”
