Beside instead of on the slopes

Difficult weather and track conditions upset Jasin Ferati and his teammates at the fourth event of the Italian Formula 4 Championship on the Mugello Grand Prix circuit.

Tuscany did not present its holiday face for races 10 to 12 of the Italian Formula 4 Championship. Dark clouds and a lot of short-term precipitation affected racing right from the first practice session and presented the 30 drivers and their engineers with constantly changing, tricky tasks. With the exception of the first practice sessions and the last race on Sunday evening, rain tires had to be used at all times and many participants couldn't cope with that.

17-year-old Jasin Ferati from Winterthur was one of them. In the first qualifying, he didn't manage to come up with a  reasonable lap time in the front half of the table and had to be satisfied with starting position 24 for races 1 and 3 after an interruption. In the second qualifying it was still enough for position 17 and a much better starting position in the second race. But even this hope was deceptive, because in the serious battle Ferati and the other pilots from Jenzer Motorsport were too often to be found next to the piste.

New signing Francesco Braschi and Petr Wisnicki spun into the grass behind the safety car in the early stages of the first race and went offside. Ferati managed the same “feat” following the same procedure after the second race was given clearance. "A rookie mistake that should never have happened to me," said the Winterthur resident annoyed. Instead of 17th, he had to start the race from last place and only finished 22nd after another spin. The fact that in the final phase he was running at a similar speed as the top drivers was a bad consolation. “Like in qualifying, it took me far too long to trust the car. A completely new experience,” he wondered.

The planned reparation in the third race on the finally dry race track did not work either. Ferati found himself involved in an early collision and had to settle for 20th place. The best result of the disappointing weekend was 15th place in the first race, in which he was able to improve by nine positions. Team colleague Filip Ugran did better in the final race. After going into the gravel on the start corner, the Romanian made up 18 positions with an aggressive drive. Sixth overall, he still has good prospects for second place. After another victory, the title can hardly be snatched from the Italian Prema driver Gabriele Mini.
