weekend to forget

A failed qualifying spoiled Jasin Ferati's third event of the Italian Formula 4 Championship at the Red Bull Ring. After all, he made it up to 15th and 16th place from a bad starting position.

At the age of 31, more Formula 4 drivers than ever before this season have registered for the Italian Championship races at the Red Bull Ring. That's why qualifying early on Saturday morning was extremely important, and that's exactly what killed Jasin Ferati. The 17-year-old from Winterthur didn't even come close to confirming his training times and, having started 29th, 23rd and 22nd, found himself faced with a very difficult task. The fact that his Jenzer car was badly damaged in the second race didn't make things any easier. Thanks to many successful overtaking maneuvers, Ferati finished in 16th, 22nd and 15th place.

“Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I wasn't able to get everything out of the car in qualifying. I had expected a lot more on this circuit, which I otherwise liked, and was therefore very disappointed,” admitted Ferati. “I then tried to forget the bad things and concentrate fully on the three races. In the first one, I did quite well. Despite two safety car interventions, I improved by 11 positions. No one else has managed that.”

The second start was even better for Ferati. “I immediately moved up from 22nd to 18th place and was in close contact with ten other drivers in front of me. But then Axel Gnos overlooked me on the outside of the start/finish straight and crashed into me. It was only with a lot of luck that I missed the pit wall,” said the Jenzer driver angrily. “Shortly afterwards I had to avoid a collision in front of me via the curbs and my car took a lot of damage. I had to make a pit stop to change the front wing and finally finished in the same place I started.”

Nothing came of the planned fireworks in race 3 either. “Since the underbody and other things were also damaged in the previous incident, it was not possible to optimally set up the car. As a result, I couldn't keep up with the group in front of me and had to confine myself to defending 15th place against Dexter Patterson. At least that worked,” said Ferati, who gained another experience.

Since his Jenzer teammate Filip Ugran was not allowed to travel to Austria due to the quarantine regulations and other top drivers made a mistake, Ferrari protégé Gabriele Mini is now the first title contender as the race winner. The other winners of the weekend were the American Jak Crawford and the Paraguayan-German Joshua Duerksen.
