Accident costs first points

Accident costs first points$

With 11th place in the first Imola race, Jasin Ferati equaled his best result so far in the Italian F4 championship. The first points prevented a spin in the rain and a team-internal crash in the fight for 7th place.

In all three races of the first Imola weekend, points were within reach for the Winterthur youngster Jasin Ferati. Instead of this, there was not only frustration and disappointment, but also the gratifying certainty of being able to keep up with the top group in the Italian Formula 4 Championship. There were a variety of reasons for the missed opportunities. It was the move back four positions on the first grid grid due to a controversial penalty and the flawless drives of the top 10 drivers in the first 30-minute race on Saturday. A pirouette in the wet Alta variant and a heavy collision with previously victorious team-mate Filip Ugran in the two Sunday races.

"At the beginning of the weekend things didn't look as rosy as we had hoped for with the set-up problems," said Ferati. “But after finishing 12th in the first qualifying session, I felt ready for the first races at the famous Autodromo Dino and Enzo Ferrari. Because of overtaking with a yellow flag in a situation in which I couldn't help it, I was put back 4 places. Having moved up to 11th place, I only missed out on the points because the gap was already too big and there were no failures at the front despite many fights.”

In the third race, with three safety car phases and seven retirements, there was no longer any sign of a restrained driving style. "From 12th place on the grid, which was confirmed this time, I moved up to 9th place in the first two laps," said the 17-year-old Swiss happily. “When trying to gain more ground, there was first contact and then a violent collision with my teammate Filip Ugran. “There were three of us next to each other in the first turn. There was just one too many and this led to a normal racing accident,” the Romanian said afterwards without resentment.

Ferati didn't want to know anything about assigning blame either. “Despite these negative experiences, I am satisfied with my performance. After a rather restrained race despite a lot of overtaking manoeuvres, I got faster and faster in very different conditions and kept up with the best in terms of speed. That makes me positive for the next races at the Red Bull Ring. I now know that I can make it into the top 10 on my own. The increase compared to the start event in Misano is obvious.”
